John Pousland House (1732)
Next to the Old North Congregational Church in Marblehead is a house built in 1732 for John Pousland, a joiner. From 1780 to 1830, the house was home to Capt. Richard Dixey and family. Richard Dixey rode the first ferry from Naugus Head to Salem.
I’ve been trying to find my ancestors that resided in Marblehead but can’t be sure. I have only identified a Greatgrand Father, Charles A Pousland, but would appreciate any help in finding out more.
I have 7 generations of Pousland family including some of yours . You can contact me I’d be happy to help or even send you information. Ken
Daniel — The Dixey you referred to did not ride the first ferry to Salem (which was in the 1600s), but operated it, I believe. Check the book “Marblehead History and Traditions” by Samuel Roads. It’s a good resource for a lot about Marblehead history, and is very accurate.
Ken — I would be interested in material about an Elizabeth Massury Pousland in the mid-1700s. Was she related to the John Pousland family noted here, and do you know the date she died ? Thank you !
