About
This blog will feature historic buildings from throughout Massachusetts, although right now the focus is on Boston, Cambridge and Salem. I hope to make more excursions from Connecticut (where I live) to other towns in Massachusetts. Until then, I will occasionally update the site with pics I have from earlier visits. This site’s companion blog, Historic Buildings of Connecticut, is updated much more frequently.
Is there a comprehensive listing available of Bulfinch-designed buildings, houses, etc. in Massachusetts?

Hi,
I’m an italian Phd student and I’m writing my Phd dissertation about preservation in the USA. I’d like to use 1 picture from your website (a house in historic Deerfield):

Is it possible? It’s just for my Phd thesis. I will credit you, of course.
Thank you,
Chiara
Hello,
The association 40m3 in co edition with the Brittany Contemporary Art Collection is setting up the publication of a book about Benoit Marie Moriceau’s work named “Psycho”.
The publication theme will be an artwork that he realized last year here in Rennes, France.
Mr Moriceau would like to make appear images from his preparative researches, and the photo of the Allen House is among them.
We would like to know who do we have to contact for the copyright matters.
Thank you in advance for the precious help you may give!
We are at your convenience for any question you may have in this respect.
Best regards,
Maïna Loaec
I wrote you a while ago about the Allen house picture!
You were ok to let us publish it…unfortunately, the image quality is not good enough! Could you send me a 300dpi, 5×4 inches image?
thank you a lot!!!
Maïna

Hello,
Thank you for your wonderful web site! May I suggest another addition from MA. I am the secretary for the Francis Wyman Association which owns the Francis Wyman Homestead in Burlington, MA. We have open houses in the summer and are also open for appointments. We would love to be added to your beautiful web site and would love to discuss with you how to do that. Please contact me at the email address above if you would like to consider us! Thank you for your time and again for this web site!

Hello,
I live in Holyoke, MA, and am doing some volunteering at the Wisteriahurst Museum, during which I came across your site(s). I love what you have for Holyoke! Thanks!
I noticed what might be a typo, or maybe just a “copying” of an historical text, that used cusine instead of cuisine. I only write as a possible help, not with any huge concern. Here is the link, the referenced is in the description of the rooftop restaurant. Thanks again.

John Gurvitch : I fixed the typo, thanks!
Could you tell me the illustrator or source for the map you have in your banner? I love it!! Also, would suggest you add the Town of Belmont to your list – was surprised not to see it. Thanks in advance,
Katie
The banner is from a 19th century bird’s-eye-view of North Adams.
Nice photographic images on your site !
I am looking for information on what is now 700 Main Street in Cambridge (formerly affiliated with various numerals on Osborne St). There is a long history associated with our building, but I’m not sure where to start (after google) to help find additional information on the tenants and events that have been at home in this building in centuries gone by. Any suggestions?
Love your website. Would you be willing to exchange links. I’ve already added you to my list of links.
Just found you’re site and really like it. I am researching my Hinckley line which ties to the Perry line. Would it be ok to add you’re photo of the Perry to them through Ancestry? Thanks for the website.

Daniel,
I very much appreciate your Site. My family and I are seriously considering relocating to the region. If you take a look at our website magnetite.com you can see why. I recieve a tremendous amount of leads from the area and would like to be local to sell and install.
any thoughts on your feedback about our product and any connections we should make, as well as good places to raise a family in the area would be great.
Thanks
Ray
Hi Daniel- I am looking for the “Bill” who responded to me under the “Potter Mansion” . Can you get a message to him and give him my email? Melissa,
I’m a direct descendant of John Potter and my family’s genealogist. I’d be interested in talking to you about the former No. Brookfield location of the Potter Mansion.
Can you please help me? My email is mellyb@charter.net
Thank you, Melissa
I am writing to ask permission to use your photos of 3 buildings at Old Sturbridge Village which came from Northeast Connecticut: Law Office, Pottery, and Thompson Bank.
These would be used in a family history book on the Whitaker family, who lived in that area. This book will be privately published (about 250 copies), for free distribution (not for sale) to family members and selected friends. Of course, we would give proper credit.
Thank you for your consideration of my request. ~ Stephen L. Robbins
I am emailing to request the use of the photo of Greenleaf House and also ask if by chance you have an older picture of it. I have searched the internet and have not been able to find another one. I am writing a story about my great aunt who worked for Ada Comstock and lived in Greenleaf from 1925-1940. This picture will be used in a book that is being published sometime in the next year..thank you for your help. I really enjoy seeing all the photos and info that you have here..
That photo of the Greenleaf House is the only one I have, sorry!
Dr. Ellwood Kirby is buried at Laurel Hill Cemetery in Philadelphia, PA, not the cemetery in Kentucky you’ve linked to in your post about Kirby Memorial Theater. (That’s the grave of another Elwood Kirby–but with only one L.) You’ll find the right Dr. Kirby at this link: http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GSln=Kirby&GSfn=Ellwood&GSbyrel=all&GSdyrel=all&GSob=n&GRid=136448976&df=all&
This is a wonderful website! Thanks for doing all the work – the photography and historical information are both superb. If you ever come back to Waltham, you might want to check out three wonderful historic estates: Gore Estate, Stonehurst (Robert Treat Paine Estate), and Lyman Estate.
Please ignore (and delete if possible) the prior post – I forgot to click on “Older Posts” – great job!
Congratulations on your website. I appreciate your work. I will be visiting from time to time.
Hello, I just posted a write-up on The Honorable John Sprague House (1771), Lancaster, MA on the Historic Buildings of Massachusetts Facebook page. Please feel free to post it on your website.
Thanks for the informative and fascinating content.

Good Afternoon,
We are creating a Black Boston Freedom Trail of sites and would love to use your photo of the 3 Smith court residences: http://mass.historicbuildingsct.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/04/3-Smith-Court.jpg
We will of course credit you as the author. Is this okay with you?
Thank you,

Love the picture of the old waltham police station, I would like permission to use the picture on a facebook page for the waltham museum. I will give credit. If you send the original and I can use it as our page photo I will give credit and link to your page. Thank you in advance.
LOVE your blog. I could spend hours here vs. grading papers or lesson-planning. Thank you for sharing with us.
Does anyone know who this “Carolyn” is (see link) or how to reach her? I’m keen on talking to her about her grandfather’s farm.

I would like to use a couple of your pictures in a scholarly research paper about New England domestic architecture. I have other pix of the buildings, but in some instances your shots are much better. May I have a written release from you? If so, how would you like the photo credit to read? “Photo: Historic Houses of Connecticut (HHC),” or “Photo: Historic Houses of Massachusetts (HHM),” for example – or would you prefer some other form, or a credit to you by name?
How does ones building get listed ?
Ben,
The buildings featured on this site are ones I take pictures of on my visits to Massachusetts. I am happy to take suggestions of good buildings to include here and if I visit where your building is located I’ll keep it in mind as one to take a picture of.
Good afternoon,
During your travels in MA, I would encourage you to take a picture of the Peak House in Medfield.
I have listed our website which goes into great detail about the building and the exhibits.
Thank you and best regards,
Robert Babson
Is there a way to contact someone in charge of this website to request permission to use the picture of the Children’s Chime Tower (1878) in an upcoming publication?
How can I add the Woman’s Club in Westfield Ma? It will be 100 years old in 2026.
