Also known as the <a href=\"https:\/\/mhc-macris.net\/Details.aspx?MhcId=GLO.363\">Sargent-Murray-Gilman-Hough House<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sargent_House_Museum\">the home<\/a> was built in 1782 for <a href=\"https:\/\/huuc.net\/judith-sargent-stevens-murray\/\">Judith Sargent Murray<\/a> (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.findagrave.com\/memorial\/22216353\/judith-murray\">1751-1820<\/a>), an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thoughtco.com\/judith-sargent-murray-3529443\">author and early advocate for women&#8217;s rights<\/a>, and her first husband, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.geni.com\/people\/Capt-John-Stevens\/6000000021490499668\">Capt. John Stevens<\/a>, a merchant in the West Indies trade. Her second husband was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uuworld.org\/articles\/john-murray-conversion\">John Murray<\/a>, a founder of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uua.org\/find?gclid=Cj0KCQiA4feBBhC9ARIsABp_nbW_6p28kxMvIdJwzxLGOp96_oILEO-jFY8wDgpxP8n8lsDUepavZP4aAlf9EALw_wcB\">Universalist Church<\/a> in America. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sargenthouse.org\/about\">The museum<\/a> has a collection of American furniture and art, including paintings by Sargent family descendant <a href=\"https:\/\/www.johnsingersargent.org\/\">John Singer Sargent<\/a>.  <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Sargent House Museum is located at 49 Middle Street in Gloucester.
