It was <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Puritan_House\">constructed<\/a> by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.findagrave.com\/memorial\/176046282\/james-c_-tappan\">Col. James Tappan<\/a>, a New Hampshire schoolteacher who <a href=\"https:\/\/books.google.com\/books?id=abJ4Ctql6M0C&#038;lpg=PA36&#038;ots=4Yak_PSrlt&#038;dq=james%20tappan%20gloucester'&#038;pg=PA36#v=onepage&#038;q=james%20tappan%20gloucester'&#038;f=false\">once taught Daniel Webster<\/a>. An addition in 1840 doubled the size of <a href=\"https:\/\/fitzhenrylaneonline.org\/historical_material\/?type=Gloucester+Buildings+%26+Businesses&#038;section=Brick+Houses+%2F+Gloucester+House+Hotel\">the building<\/a>. <a href=\"https:\/\/books.google.com\/books?id=dZo-AAAAYAAJ&#038;pg=PA40#v=onepage&#038;q&#038;f=false\">As related<\/a> in <em>The Gloucester Book<\/em> (1921), by Frank Lucius Cox, &#8220;It has been known successively as the Tappan Hotel, Gloucester House, Mason House and Puritan House, but during recent years it has not been used as a hotel. During the middle of the nineteenth century all the important social functions of the town were held at this hotel.&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.capeannmuseum.org\/exhibitions\/homer-beach\/\">Winslow Homer<\/a> stayed at the hotel <a href=\"http:\/\/gloucester.harborwalk.org\/story-posts\/sp-29\/\">in 1873<\/a>. Today it has a sign put up in 1978 that says &#8220;Blackburn Tavern&#8221; for a former restaurant located in <a href=\"https:\/\/goodmorninggloucester.org\/2020\/01\/04\/open-window\/\">the building<\/a>. Currently <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tonnorestaurant.com\/tonno-gloucester\">Tono Restaurant<\/a> occupies <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gappromo.com\/a-history-of-our-building\/\">the building<\/a> on the Main Street side, while <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gappromo.com\/\">GAP Promo<\/a> is on the Washington Street side.  <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The oldest brick building in the town of Gloucester is a former hotel at 1-3 Washington Street and 2 Main Street that was built in 1810.
