What became known as the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nonotuck.us\/kens\/Holyoke_Paper_Mills\/Crocker%20McElwain\/index.html\">Crocker Mill in Holyoke<\/a> was <a href=\"http:\/\/www.zapix.com\/holyokemass\/hcv_1879\/jcn.html\">built<\/a> by the Hampden Paper Company in 1870 at <a href=\"http:\/\/mhc-macris.net\/Details.aspx?MhcId=HLY.8\">14 Water Street<\/a>, between the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Holyoke_Canal_System\">Third Level Canal<\/a> and the Connecticut River, to replace an earlier wooden mill building erected in 1864. The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.holyokemass.com\/pichampden\/p128.html\">Crocker Manufacturing Company<\/a>, which produced high quality colored and ornamental papers, was organized in 1871 and acquired the building. The company was sold to the American Writing Paper Company in 1899.
