Matthew&#8217;s ancestors, <a href=\"http:\/\/books.google.com\/books?id=wkBWAAAAMAAJ&#038;pg=PA1#v=onepage&#038;q=&#038;f=false\">John Keep and his family<\/a>, had been killed by Indians while crossing from the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.longmeadowhistoricalsociety.org\/history1.html\">&#8220;long meddowe&#8221;<\/a> by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/23206546@N04\/3630151988\/in\/pool-24101322@N00\">Pecousic Brook<\/a> to attend church services in Springfield in 1676.  <a href=\"http:\/\/www.usgennet.org\/usa\/ma\/county\/hampden\/hist\/hist.html\">Longmeadow<\/a> became a separate precinct from Springfield in 1713, the same year the earliest section of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.longmeadow.org\/historichomes\/pages\/55.html\">Bliss-Keep House<\/a> (now at the rear of the building) was built.
