It was built around 1820 by <a href=\"https:\/\/books.google.com\/books?id=poPQAAAAMAAJ&#038;lpg=PA50&#038;ots=-wabqcuTAl&#038;dq=4-8%20bank%20row%20pittsfield&#038;pg=PA50#v=onepage&#038;q=4-8%20bank%20row%20pittsfield&#038;f=false\">William G. Backus<\/a>, who ran <a href=\"https:\/\/books.google.com\/books?id=_4PQAAAAMAAJ&#038;lpg=RA1-PA1914&#038;ots=pCs43JSgW5&#038;dq=4-8%20bank%20row%20pittsfield%20backus&#038;pg=RA1-PA1892#v=onepage&#038;q=4-8%20bank%20row&#038;f=false\">a stove and plumber&#8217;s supply store<\/a> for over half-a-century.
