It was the first of the great brick Federal-style houses to be constructed <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Chestnut_Street_District\">on a street famed for its architecture<\/a>. In 1893 the house was <a href=\"http:\/\/books.google.com\/books?id=O10rxQeYPIkC&#038;lpg=PP1&#038;pg=PA198#v=onepage&#038;q&#038;f=false\">remodeled<\/a> in the Colonial Revival style by architect <a href=\"http:\/\/www.escapesnorth.com\/trail_arch\/bios.php?sec=&#038;bio=little\">Arthur Little<\/a> for owner William G. Barker. The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cardcow.com\/416086\/beautiful-colonial-doorway-window-39-chestnut-salem-massachusetts\/\">central bay window<\/a> on the second floor above <a href=\"http:\/\/www.loc.gov\/pictures\/item\/det1994017004\/PP\/\">the original entryway<\/a> was added at that time.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The house at 39 Chestnut Street in Salem was built in 1805 for Captain Thomas Saunders.
