It was built in 1744 (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.historic-northampton.org\/virtual_tours\/Markers\/Markerpanels\/manse.html\">or as early as 1737?<\/a>) on the foundation  of the original 1684 parsonage house of <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Solomon_Stoddard\">Rev. Solomon Stoddard<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.historic-northampton.org\/highlights\/stoddard.html\">Northampton&#8217;s second minister<\/a> and the grandfather of <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Jonathan_Edwards_(theologian)\">Jonathan Edwards<\/a>. The original house passed to Rev. Stoddard&#8217;s son, Colonel John Stoddard, who built <a href=\"http:\/\/mass.historicbuildingsct.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/001.jpg\">the current house<\/a>. Col. Stoddard negotiated the return of the captives taken to Canada from the <a href=\"http:\/\/1704.deerfield.history.museum\/\">Deerfield Raid of 1704<\/a>. The Stoddard family owned the house until 1812. A later resident was <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Josiah_Gilbert_Holland\">Josiah Gilbert Holland<\/a>, an editor of the <em><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_Republican_%28Springfield,_Massachusetts%29\">Springfield Republican<\/a><\/em> and a founder and editor of <em><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Scribner%27s_Monthly\">Scribner&#8217;s Monthly<\/a><\/em>. <a href=\"http:\/\/books.google.com\/books?id=nhc3AAAAIAAJ&#038;pg=PR3#v=onepage&#038;q&#038;f=false\">Holland<\/a> also <a href=\"http:\/\/www.oldandsold.com\/articles35\/american-lit-29.shtml\">wrote<\/a> novels, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.poemhunter.com\/josiah-gilbert-holland\/poems\/\">poetry<\/a> and such non-fiction works as a <em><a href=\"http:\/\/books.google.com\/books?id=ZZgZEOt2c4AC&#038;pg=PP5#v=onepage&#038;q&#038;f=false\">History of Western Massachusetts<\/a><\/em> (1855) and <a href=\"http:\/\/quod.lib.umich.edu\/j\/jala\/2629860.0023.103\/--holland-s-informants-the-construction-of-josiah-hollands?rgn=main;view=fulltext\">an influential biography of Abraham Lincoln<\/a>, published in 1866. He and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.emilydickinsonmuseum.org\/node\/119\">his wife Elizabeth<\/a> were also <a href=\"http:\/\/brattleborohistory.com\/literary\/emily-dickinson-daguerreotype.html\">friends<\/a> and frequent <a href=\"http:\/\/www.jstor.org\/discover\/10.2307\/2921473?uid=3739576&#038;uid=2129&#038;uid=2&#038;uid=70&#038;uid=4&#038;uid=3739256&#038;sid=21102604186831\">corespondents<\/a> of <a href=\"http:\/\/mass.historicbuildingsct.com\/?p=3120\">Emily Dickinson<\/a>. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/31141544@N06\/4012785714\/\">The house&#8217;s cupola<\/a> is a mid-nineteenth-century addition. <a href=\"http:\/\/imagemuseum.smugmug.com\/keyword\/manse\/279456923_D94Ac#!i=279456923&#038;k=TR64TXJ\">The house<\/a> was <a href=\"http:\/\/books.google.com\/books\/about\/The_Manse.html?id=OS4ctwAACAAJ\">an inn<\/a> for a time in the twentieth century.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Manse is a house at 54 Prospect Street in Northampton.
