{"id":63,"date":"2008-10-07T04:25:52","date_gmt":"2008-10-07T08:25:52","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mass.historicbuildingsct.com\/?p=63"},"modified":"2016-09-17T00:39:52","modified_gmt":"2016-09-17T04:39:52","slug":"the-sheldon-hawks-house-1754","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mass.historicbuildingsct.com\/?p=63","title":{"rendered":"Sheldon-Hawks House (1754)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><center><img src='http:\/\/mass.historicbuildingsct.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/10\/sheldon-hawks-house.jpg' alt='sheldon-hawks-house.jpg' \/><\/center><\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.historic-deerfield.org\/sheldon-house\">John Sheldon House<\/a>, also known as the <a href=\"http:\/\/books.google.com\/books?id=3UEOAAAAIAAJ&#038;printsec=toc&#038;source=gbs_summary_r&#038;cad=0#PPA30,M1\">Sheldon-Hawks House<\/a>, on the Street in Deerfield, was built perhaps as early as 1743, but more likely in the period from 1754-1757.  Built by John Sheldon, the grandson of Ensign John Sheldon.  <a href=\"http:\/\/news.webshots.com\/photo\/1201702208027273083viuiHy\">it<\/a> was occupied by three generations of the Sheldons, a farming family.  In 1802, a single-story ell was added to the rear.  <a href=\"http:\/\/www.waymarking.com\/waymarks\/WM2M0V\">The house<\/a> was the birthplace of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.memorialhall.mass.edu\/people_places\/view.jsp?itemtype=1&#038;id=505\">George Sheldon<\/a>, an early <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/George_Sheldon_(preservationist)\">preservationist<\/a>, who wrote <em><a href=\"http:\/\/books.google.com\/books?id=W2wWAAAAYAAJ&#038;printsec=titlepage&#038;source=gbs_summary_r&#038;cad=0\">A History of Deerfield<\/a><\/em> and founded the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.old-deerfield.org\/museum.htm\">Pocumtuck Valley Memorial Society<\/a>.  George Sheldon inherited the house in 1860 and in 1871, his daughter, Susan Arabella, moved in with her husband, Edward A. Hawks.  After Edward&#8217;s death in 1925, it was inherited by their daughter, Susan Belle Hawks, who ran The Old Homestead Antiques Shop from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cardcow.com\/120817\/sheldon-hawks-house-deerfield-us-state-town-views-massachusetts-deerfield\/\">her home<\/a>.
