{"id":579,"date":"2009-08-09T21:00:25","date_gmt":"2009-08-09T21:00:25","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mass.historicbuildingsct.com\/?p=579"},"modified":"2013-06-29T01:48:01","modified_gmt":"2013-06-29T05:48:01","slug":"the-mount-1902","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mass.historicbuildingsct.com\/?p=579","title":{"rendered":"The Mount (1902)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><center><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/mass.historicbuildingsct.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/08\/The-Mount.jpg\" alt=\"The Mount\" title=\"The Mount\" width=\"500\" height=\"328\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-585\" srcset=\"https:\/\/mass.historicbuildingsct.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/08\/The-Mount.jpg 500w, https:\/\/mass.historicbuildingsct.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/08\/The-Mount-300x196.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/center><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.kirjasto.sci.fi\/wharton.htm\">Edith Wharton<\/a>&#8216;s first book, <em><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_Decoration_of_Houses\">The Decoration of Houses<\/a><\/em> (1897), written with <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ogden_Codman,_Jr.\">Ogden Codman, Jr.<\/a>, was very influential as a guide to interior design.  <a href=\"http:\/\/digicoll.library.wisc.edu\/cgi-bin\/DLDecArts\/DLDecArts-idx?id=DLDecArts.DecHouseWhar\">The work<\/a> was a reaction to the Victorian style of heavily curtained and cluttered rooms, instead emphasizing the style of the harmonious and simply proportioned classical rooms of Europe.  <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nps.gov\/history\/Nr\/travel\/pwwmh\/ma34.htm\">The main house<\/a> of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.edithwharton.org\/index.php?catId=6\">Wharton<\/a>&#8216;s country estate in the Berkshires, called <a href=\"http:\/\/www.edithwharton.org\/\">the Mount<\/a> and located in Lenox, was built in 1902 and displays <a href=\"http:\/\/xroads.virginia.edu\/~MA01\/Davis\/wharton\/wharton\/decoration.html\">the principles she had advocated in her book<\/a>.  <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_Mount_(Lenox,_Massachusetts)\">The house<\/a>, designed by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wsu.edu\/~campbelld\/wharton\/index.html\">Wharton<\/a> with assistance from Codman, was inspired by the seventeenth century English estate, <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Belton_House\">Belton House<\/a>, but <a href=\"http:\/\/www.edithwharton.org\/index.php?catId=7\">the Mount<\/a>&#8216;s design also drew strongly on classical <a href=\"http:\/\/xroads.virginia.edu\/~MA01\/Davis\/wharton\/renaissance\/influences.html\">Italian<\/a> and French architecture.  The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.edithwharton.org\/index.php?catId=7&#038;subCatId=2\">gardens<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/xroads.virginia.edu\/~MA01\/Davis\/wharton\/mount\/grounds.html\">grounds<\/a> were also designed by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.npg.si.edu\/exh\/wharton\/whar3.htm\">Wharton<\/a>, with the <a href=\"http:\/\/xroads.virginia.edu\/~MA01\/Davis\/wharton\/mount\/gardens.html\">kitchen garden<\/a> and drive being designed by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.geocities.com\/EnchantedForest\/6741\/\">Wharton<\/a>&#8216;s niece, <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Beatrix_Farrand\">Beatrix Jones Farrand<\/a>.  <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Edith_Wharton\">Wharton<\/a> and her husband, Edward, lived in the Mount from 1902 to 1911.  The house was later used as a girls&#8217; dormitory for the <a href=\"http:\/\/helpsavethemount.blogspot.com\/2008\/12\/i-lived-among-ghosts-of-novels.html\">Foxhollow School<\/a>, and the site of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.shakespeare.org\/\">Shakespeare &#038; Company<\/a>.  In the 1980s, the property was bought by Edith Wharton Restoration, which has restored the grounds and much of the house.  The house was <a href=\"http:\/\/www.caribousmom.com\/2009\/05\/24\/edith-whartons-home-the-mount\/\">opened to the public<\/a> in 2001, but in 2008 the institution, which had spent millions to acquire the surviving half of Edith Wharton&#8217;s collection of books, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/arts-entertainment\/books\/features\/edith-wharton-battle-to-save-the-mount-830627.html\">defaulted on loans<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.luxist.com\/2008\/03\/26\/the-mount-edith-whartons-classic-home-is-fighting-foreclosure\/\">faced foreclosure<\/a>.
