Watson<\/a> purchased the land, and 1864, when he sold the property, which by then included <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Octagon_House_%28Westfield,_Massachusetts%29\">the house<\/a>.  <a href=\"http:\/\/www.octagon.bobanna.com\/MA.html\">Octagon houses<\/a> were popularized by <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Orson_Squire_Fowler\">Orson Squire Fowler<\/a> in <a href=\"http:\/\/books.google.com\/books\/about\/The_octagon_house.html?id=PblPAAAAMAAJ\">his book<\/a>, <em>The Octagon House, A Home for All<\/em>.  A two-story rear extension was added to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/48953002@N06\/4907647309\/\">the house<\/a> in the early 1870s.  The front porch was added around 1900.  <a href=\"http:\/\/holyokemass.com\/2010\/05\/12\/albert-steiger-to-observe-75th-birthday-today\/\">Albert Steiger<\/a>, founder of <a href=\"http:\/\/departmentstoremuseum.blogspot.com\/2010\/10\/albert-steiger-co-springfield.html\">Steiger&#8217;s Department Stores<\/a>, owned <a href=\"http:\/\/landmarkhunter.com\/156292-octagon-house\/\">the house<\/a> in the 1880s.  After 1908, it was owned by the Loomis family.
