The name was officially changed to Central Church in 1879.  Waldo paid for the construction of the congregation&#8217;s first meetinghouse in 1823-1825.  <a href=\"http:\/\/books.google.com\/books?id=jLHRAAAAMAAJ&#038;pg=PA20#v=onepage&#038;q&#038;f=false\">Located on Main Street<\/a>, near George Street, it was later <a href=\"http:\/\/books.google.com\/books?id=jLHRAAAAMAAJ&#038;pg=PA53#v=onepage&#038;q&#038;f=false\">replaced<\/a> by <a href=\"http:\/\/mhc-macris.net\/Details.aspx?MhcId=WOR.371\">the current church<\/a>, built in 1884-1885 at the corner of Salisbury Street and Institute Road.  The Romanesque Revival-style <a href=\"http:\/\/www.loc.gov\/pictures\/item\/det1994000919\/PP\/\">Central Church<\/a>, built of Longmeadow brownstone, was designed by <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Stephen_C._Earle\">Stephen C. Earle<\/a>.  When the studio of <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/John_LaFarge\">John LaFarge<\/a> proved too busy to design the interiors, the church commissioned Sarah Lyman Whitman, a former student of <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/William_Morris_Hunt\">William Morris Hunt<\/a>.  <a href=\"http:\/\/www.americanantiquarian.org\/Findingaids\/central_church_worcester_mass.pdf\">Central Church<\/a> merged with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.waymarking.com\/waymarks\/WM93DR_Union_Congregational_Church_Worcester_MA\">Chestnut Street Congregational Church<\/a> in 1982 to form <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ucc-worcester.org\/\">United Congregational Church<\/a>.      <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Dissatisfaction over the choice of minister at the Old South Church in Worcester in 1820 led Daniel Waldo (1763-1845) to organize a new parish, originally called the Calvinist Church.
