The Academy later expanded and the Pocumtuck Valley Memorial Association purchased the old school building in 1877.  The building was renovated and opened in 1880 as the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.old-deerfield.org\/museum.htm\">Memorial Hall Museum<\/a>, displaying <a href=\"http:\/\/memorialhall.mass.edu\/home.html\">a collection of objects<\/a> gathered by antiquarian <a href=\"http:\/\/www.memorialhall.mass.edu\/people_places\/view.jsp?itemtype=1&#038;id=505\">George Sheldon<\/a>.  Memorial Hall continues today as <a href=\"http:\/\/www.yankeemagazine.com\/travel\/massachusetts\/memorialhall\">a museum<\/a> of <a href=\"http:\/\/books.google.com\/books?id=W2wWAAAAYAAJ&#038;pg=PP7#v=onepage&#038;q=&#038;f=false\">Deerfield history<\/a> and an adjacent building houses <a href=\"http:\/\/www.historic-deerfield.org\/memorial\">the libraries<\/a> of the PVMA and Historic Deerfield. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Deerfield Academy was founded in 1797 and a brick building, designed by Asher Benjamin, was built to house the school in 1799.
