It was built in 1878 and was a gift to the town by <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/David_Dudley_Field_II\">David Dudley Field<\/a>, a wealthy New York lawyer and son of <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/David_Dudley_Field_I\">Rev. D.D. Fields<\/a> of Stockbridge.  Field gave <a href=\"http:\/\/mhc-macris.net\/Details.aspx?MhcId=STO.907\">the tower<\/a> in memory of his grandchildren and, in accordance with his instructions, its chimes are rung at 5:30 every evening between &#8220;apple blossom time and the first frost on the pumpkin.&#8221;  <a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/11042310@N08\/4797357121\/\">The tower<\/a> is believed to have been built on the site of Stockbridge&#8217;s original meeting house of 1739.  The wooden portion at the top of <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/File:The_Children%27s_Chimes,_Stockbridge,_MA.jpg\">the tower<\/a> represents the Stick style of architecture.
