It was built in 1713 by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.findagrave.com\/cgi-bin\/fg.cgi?page=gr&#038;GRid=14220463\">Samuel Porter<\/a> (1660-1722), the son of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kukkus.com\/felsing\/getperson.php?personID=I3454&#038;tree=02\">Samuel Porter<\/a>, an original settler of Hadley.  <a href=\"http:\/\/books.google.com\/books?id=itDdRWe41EAC&#038;lpg=PP1&#038;pg=PA105#v=onepage&#038;q&#038;f=false\">The house<\/a> is famed for its <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bu.edu\/dublinseminar\/BookContents\/DoorwaysContents.html\">Connecticut River Valley scroll pedimented doorway<\/a>, which was probably added to house by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.findagrave.com\/cgi-bin\/fg.cgi?page=gr&#038;GRid=15090991\">Eleazer Porter<\/a> in about 1761.  <a href=\"http:\/\/imagemuseum.smugmug.com\/History\/Hadley\/4436349_CRNeS\/6\/361219538_dAfBp#!i=361219473&#038;k=bqNso\">The house<\/a> remained in the Porter family until 1868, when it was purchased by Oliver Thayer, a stagecoach driver.
