Kyburg House (1929)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><center><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/mass.historicbuildingsct.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/Kyburg-House.jpg\" alt=\"\" title=\"Kyburg House, Springfield\" width=\"500\" height=\"330\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-4839\" srcset=\"https:\/\/mass.historicbuildingsct.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/Kyburg-House.jpg 500w, https:\/\/mass.historicbuildingsct.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/Kyburg-House-300x198.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/center><\/p>\n<p>One of the houses that later became part of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.masslive.com\/living\/index.ssf\/2011\/06\/memories_of_the_macduffie_campus.html\">the MacDuffie School campus<\/a> in Springfield was a Tudor Revival home built in 1929 for <a href=\"http:\/\/www.findagrave.com\/cgi-bin\/fg.cgi?page=gr&#038;GRid=%2745026637%27&#038;ref=wvr\">George W. Kyburg<\/a>, a wealthy businessman.  Located at 6 Ames Hill Drive, the house was designed by <a href=\"http:\/\/springfield-history.com\/indian-orchard-grammar#comment-1281\">Max Westhof<\/a>, who had moved his practice <a href=\"http:\/\/hsl.wikispot.org\/Max_Westhoff\">from New York to Springfield<\/a> in 1917 and became one of the city&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/springfieldpreservationtrust.org\/index.php?option=com_acajoom&#038;act=mailing&#038;task=view&#038;listid=1&#038;mailingid=1&#038;Itemid=999\">premiere architects<\/a>.  The Kyburg House, along with the other <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/MacDuffie_School\">MacDuffie School<\/a> buildings, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.masslive.com\/news\/index.ssf\/2011\/01\/the_macduffie_school_is_sellin_1.html\">was sold<\/a> in 2011 when the school <a href=\"http:\/\/www.gazettenet.com\/2011\/04\/13\/granby-campus-gives-macduffie-school-new-lease-life?SESS87a745fe32be1aa7b05b0a9f092af2e8=gnews\">relocated<\/a> to a campus in Granby.  While the sale of the old campus, including the Kyburg House, was underway, its buildings were <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wwlp.com\/dpp\/news\/local\/hampden\/Devastating-damage-to-MacDuffie-campus\">severely damaged<\/a> by the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.huffingtonpost.com\/2011\/06\/01\/springfield-tornado_n_869985.html\">Springfield Tornado<\/a> of June 1, 2011. The <a href=\"http:\/\/mass.historicbuildingsct.com\/?p=1483\">David Ames, Jr. House<\/a>, also part of the campus and previously featured on this site, lost its roof and attic story and its front portico was damaged.  The sale of the campus <a href=\"http:\/\/www.masslive.com\/business-news\/index.ssf\/2011\/07\/former_macduffie_school_campus_in_springfield_sold_will_become_commonwealth_academy.html\">proceeded<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/preservationmass.org\/programs\/most-endangered\/\">despite the damage<\/a>, to a new owner who will <a href=\"http:\/\/www.masslive.com\/business-news\/index.ssf\/2011\/07\/former_macduffie_school_campus_in_springfield_sold_will_become_commonwealth_academy.html\">continue to use the property as a school<\/a>, called <a href=\"http:\/\/commonwealth-academy.org\/\">Commonwealth Academy<\/a>, a new urban-based private school.  <a href=\"http:\/\/www.springfieldmuseums.org\/news\/view\/620-walking_tour_to_visit_tornado-damaged_macduffie_school_campus\">Tornado recovery<\/a> was <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rebhc.org\/new\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/Repub_Tornado-Press-Event.pdf\">recently delayed due to an insurance dispute<\/a>. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>One of the houses that later became part of the MacDuffie School campus in Springfield was a Tudor Revival home built in 1929 for George W.
