Designed by the architectural firm of Gardner, Pyne &#038; Gardner of Springfield, the building is one of only two nineteenth-century structures which survive from the State Normal School at Westfield, later called Westfield State Teachers College, which is today <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Westfield_State_University\">Westfield State University<\/a>.  This school was first established by <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Horace_Mann\">Horace Mann<\/a> in 1838 in <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Barre,_Massachusetts\">Barre<\/a> and became the first coeducational public training school in the nation.  The school closed in 1841, but reopened in Westfield in 1844.  In 1956, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rubylane.com\/item\/494613-pcard57-bg3369\/Normal-Training-School-Westfield-Mass\">the training school building<\/a> became a regular elementary school called the Washington Street School.  It later was used by the Westfield District Court until 2002.  The vacant <a href=\"http:\/\/www.panoramio.com\/photo\/33375133\">building<\/a> was <a href=\"http:\/\/www.gazettenet.com\/2008\/08\/18\/westfield-state-college-puts-gown-downtown\">reacquired<\/a> by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.westfield.ma.edu\/\">Westfield State University<\/a> in 2006 and then <a href=\"http:\/\/www.masslive.com\/news\/index.ssf\/2011\/06\/pending_sale_of_westfield_stat.html\">sold<\/a> to <a href=\"http:\/\/thewestfieldnews.com\/june19-court-roof-standalone\">a developer<\/a> in 2011 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.masslive.com\/news\/index.ssf\/2011\/06\/springfield_developer_sets_agg.html\">to become market-rate student housing<\/a>.  <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>At 27 Washington Street in Westfield is a building constructed in 1899-1900 as the State Normal Training School, where student teachers gained experience from 1900 to 1956.
