John Sergeant<\/a> was the first missionary to the <a href=\"http:\/\/mohican-nsn.gov\/Departments\/Library-Museum\/Mohican_History\/origin-and-early.htm\">Mohicans of Western Massachusetts<\/a>.  He came to <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Stockbridge,_Massachusetts\">Stockbridge<\/a> in the mid-1730s and lived at first in a small cabin.  In 1739, he married Abigail Williams and by 1742 had built what is now known as the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thetrustees.org\/places-to-visit\/berkshires\/mission-house.html\">Mission House<\/a>.   In 1751, <a href=\"http:\/\/edwards.yale.edu\/research\/about-edwards\/missionary\">Jonathan Edwards<\/a> succeeded Rev. Sergeant <a href=\"http:\/\/www.britannica.com\/EBchecked\/topic\/179857\/Jonathan-Edwards\/2042\/Pastorate-at-Stockbridge\">as missionary<\/a>.  The Sergeant family continued to occupy the house until 1867.  The elaborate front doorway was added in the 1760s.  The house originally stood on Prospect Hill, but between 1926 and 1930, it was moved to its current location at 19 Main Street and was restored by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.animactionsunlimited.com\/women_of_the_berkshires.htm\">Miss Mabel Choate<\/a>, the owner of nearby <a href=\"http:\/\/mass.historicbuildingsct.com\/?p=4579\">Naumkeag<\/a>.  The Mission House&#8217;s gardens were designed from 1928 to 1933 by <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Fletcher_Steele\">Fletcher Steele<\/a>.
