It was designed by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.findagrave.com\/cgi-bin\/fg.cgi?page=gr&#038;GRid=1094\">Stanford White<\/a> of <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/McKim,_Mead_%26_White\">McKim, Mead &#038; White<\/a> for <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Joseph_Hodges_Choate\">Joseph Hodges Choate<\/a> (1832\u20131917), a prominent New York City attorney who served as American ambassador to the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Court_of_St._James%27s\">Court of St James&#8217;s<\/a> from 1899 to 1905.  <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Naumkeag\">Naumkeag<\/a> was next owned by his daughter, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.animactionsunlimited.com\/women_of_the_berkshires.htm\">Mabel Choate<\/a>, who <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thetrustees.org\/what-we-care-about\/history-culture\/a-touch-of-nonsense.html\">worked with<\/a> noted landscape designer <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Fletcher_Steele\">Fletcher Steele<\/a> to design <a href=\"http:\/\/gonewengland.about.com\/od\/berkshiressights\/ig\/Naumkeag-Gardens-Photo-Tour\/\">the estate&#8217;s landscaped grounds<\/a>.
