The section on the west, or left, side was built first, c.1811, by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.findagrave.com\/cgi-bin\/fg.cgi?page=gr&#038;GRid=37721532\">Joshua Upham<\/a> for <a href=\"http:\/\/books.google.com\/books?id=Z2saAAAAYAAJ&#038;lpg=PA177&#038;ots=cwa1s3hEmi&#038;dq=%22Joseph%20White%2C%20Jr.%22%20salem&#038;pg=PA177#v=onepage&#038;q=%22Joseph%20White,%20Jr.%22%20salem&#038;f=false\">Joseph White, Jr.<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/mass.historicbuildingsct.com\/?p=4511\">whose brother Stephen lived next door<\/a>.  <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ebay.com\/itm\/1950-Rotogravure-Salem-Massachusetts-Silsbee-Clark-House-Furniture-Decoration-\/300747488694?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&#038;hash=item4605f27db6\">The house<\/a> was sold by Joseph&#8217;s widow, Eliza, to the Silsbee family, whom owned it until 1880.  The attached house on the east, or right, side was built c. 1840 for the Misses Hannah and Betsy Hodges and was purchased by John N. Mott in 1871.
