Preceded by a City Hall on the same site designed by Bulfinch, the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.oldcityhall.com\/\">1864 building<\/a> was one of the first in America to be designed in the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.city-data.com\/picfilesc\/picc42973.php\">elaborate French Second Empire style<\/a> and further helped to popularize the use of the style throughout the country.  With the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.celebrateboston.com\/strange\/governmentcenter.htm\">1969 move<\/a> to the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Boston_City_Hall\">new City Hall<\/a>, the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.celebrateboston.com\/architecture\/public\/oldcityhall.htm\">old building<\/a> was <a href=\"http:\/\/www.faainc.com\/Portfolio\/AllType\/tabid\/329\/Old%20City%20Hall\/tabid\/282\/Default.aspx\">adapted<\/a> to serve as space for offices and a restaurant, although at the cost of some of the original impressive interiors.  The preservation of <a href=\"http:\/\/tps.cr.nps.gov\/nhl\/detail.cfm?ResourceId=998&#038;ResourceType=Building\">Old City Hall<\/a> is <a href=\"http:\/\/books.google.com\/books?id=Qg_uLLXLY5kC&#038;pg=PA54&#038;lpg=PA54&#038;dq=%22parisian+wedding+cake%22&#038;source=web&#038;ots=oEkvgO3FM8&#038;sig=03RIGfWZKwekxqoJ5NWTY7q_t9I&#038;hl=en&#038;sa=X&#038;oi=book_result&#038;resnum=5&#038;ct=result#PPA54,M1\">one of the earliest examples<\/a> of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.oldcityhall.com\/history.html\">adaptive reuse<\/a> of a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cluelessinboston.com\/2007\/05\/old-city-hall.html\">historic structure<\/a>.  <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Old_City_Hall_(Boston)\">Old City Hall<\/a> is also on the route of Boston&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thefreedomtrail.org\/\">Freedom Trail<\/a>.
