The cornerstone of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.digitalamherst.org\/items\/show\/209\">South College<\/a> was laid on August 9, 1820 and the completed building&#8217;s dedication took place on the same day as the inauguration of Amherst&#8217;s first president, <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Zephaniah_Swift_Moore\">Zephaniah Swift Moore<\/a>, on September 18, 1821.  <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amherstiana.org\/misc\/collegerow.html\">Located<\/a> next to <a href=\"http:\/\/mass.historicbuildingsct.com\/?p=4044\">Johnson Chapel<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amherst.edu\/offices\/facilities\/capital_projects\/project_archives\/north_south\">South College <\/a>has served as as classrooms, dormitories, laboratories, and a chapel over the years.
