The <a href=\"http:\/\/hcap.artstor.org\/cgi-bin\/library?a=d&#038;d=p1190\">College Gymnasium<\/a>, noted at the time for its state-of-the-art ventilation system, was built in 1899-1900 and was designed by <a href=\"http:\/\/eng.archinform.net\/arch\/26195.htm\">William C. Brocklesby<\/a>.  In 1950, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mtholyoke.edu\/~dalbino\/blanchard.html\">the building<\/a> was converted into offices and housed the campus post office.  In 1988, it became the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mtholyoke.edu\/facilities\/blanchard.html\">Blanchard Campus Center<\/a>, named for <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Elizabeth_Blanchard_%28educator%29\">Elizabeth Blanchard<\/a>, an 1858 graduate who served as principal (1883-1888) and acting president (1888-189) of the College.  <a href=\"http:\/\/theblancharddiaries.tumblr.com\/\">The building<\/a> was <a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/haz-caf\/4812192956\/\">much expanded<\/a> with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mtholyoke.edu\/facilities\/blanchard.html\">additional facilities<\/a> in 2003.    <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By the late 1890s there was clamoring for a gymnasium to be constructed at Mount Holyoke College in South Hadley.
