Ballard restored many <a href=\"http:\/\/www.marbleheadhistory.org\/exhibit4\/e42753a.htm\">old houses<\/a> in Marblehead.  The castle was originally called Castle Brattahlid and was intended to recreate <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Erik_the_Red\">Erik the Red<\/a>&#8216;s castle at <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Brattahl%C3%AD%C3%B0\">Brattahl\u00ed\u00f0<\/a> (&#8220;Steep Slope&#8221;), in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.archaeology.org\/online\/features\/greenland\/\">Greenland<\/a>.  In 1945, the Ballards sold <a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/rowlandw\/255276149\/\">the castle<\/a> to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.herreshoffcastle.com\/LFrancis.html\">L. Francis Herreshoff<\/a>, son the <a href=\"http:\/\/sailboatdata.com\/view_designer.asp?designer_id=31\">yacht<\/a> designer <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Nathanael_Greene_Herreshoff\">Nathanael Herreshoff<\/a>.  After <a href=\"http:\/\/www.legendinc.com\/Pages\/MarbleheadNet\/MM\/PeoplePlacesThings\/Herreshoff.html\">Herreshoff<\/a> died in 1972, he left <a href=\"http:\/\/www.herreshoffcastle.com\/History1.html\">the castle<\/a> to a longtime assistant.  The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.herreshoffcastle.com\/B%26B%20Proprietors.html\">present owners<\/a> bought it in 1990 and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bedandbreakfast.com\/massachusetts-marblehead-herreshoff-castle.html\">operate<\/a> the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/aniko_attila\/297057654\/\">castle<\/a>&#8216;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.herreshoffcastle.com\/Inside.html\">similarly Gothic-style<\/a> attached <a href=\"http:\/\/www.herreshoffcastle.com\/The_Carriage_House.html\">carriage house<\/a> as <a href=\"http:\/\/www.herreshoffcastle.com\/\">a one-unit bed &#038; breakfast<\/a>.  <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>There are a number of interesting castles in Massachusetts.
