{"id":3945,"date":"2011-12-20T13:44:39","date_gmt":"2011-12-20T18:44:39","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mass.historicbuildingsct.com\/?p=3945"},"modified":"2011-12-20T13:44:39","modified_gmt":"2011-12-20T18:44:39","slug":"amherst-college-presidents-house-1834","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mass.historicbuildingsct.com\/?p=3945","title":{"rendered":"Amherst College President&#8217;s House (1834)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><center><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/mass.historicbuildingsct.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/P7210603.jpg\" alt=\"\" title=\"President&#039;s House, Amherst College\" width=\"500\" height=\"347\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-3946\" srcset=\"https:\/\/mass.historicbuildingsct.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/P7210603.jpg 500w, https:\/\/mass.historicbuildingsct.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/P7210603-300x208.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/center><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amherstiana.org\/campus\/presidents_house.html\">The house<\/a> of the President of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.digitalamherst.org\/items\/show\/222\">Amherst College<\/a> was built in 1834-1835.  <a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/amherst_college_archives\/6432539029\/in\/photostream\">An earlier house<\/a>, built in 1821-1822, had been considered too damp and unhealthy, so <a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/amherst_college_archives\/6432543597\/in\/photostream\">the current house<\/a> was then <a href=\"http:\/\/www3.amherst.edu\/~rjyanco94\/amherst\/history\/1894tyler-ws\/chapter05\/menu.html\">built<\/a> on higher ground, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/amherst_college_archives\/6432538397\/in\/photostream\">across South Pleasant Street<\/a> from the main campus buildings.  <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cardcow.com\/27585\/presidents-house-amherst-college-massachusetts\/\">The house<\/a>, originally designed <a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/amherst_college_archives\/6432542203\/in\/photostream\">in the Greek Revival style<\/a> by Warren Slade Howland, was remodeled in 1891 and again in 1932, with a Georgian Revival style entryway on the north side.
