Kirby<\/a> (1854-1920). Kirby, a Philadelphia physician, is <a href=\"http:\/\/www.archives.upenn.edu\/histy\/features\/1800s\/1889med\/agnewclinic.html\">depicted<\/a> administering anesthetic to the surgery patient in Thomas Eakins 1889 painting <em><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_Agnew_Clinic\">The Agnew Clinic<\/a><\/em>. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/deborah-net\/5118257671\/\">The Theater<\/a> was built in 1938-1939 and was designed by <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/James_Kellum_Smith\">James Kellum Smith<\/a> of McKim, Mead &#038; White, with the help of S.R. McCandless, a theater designer.  The <a href=\"http:\/\/books.google.com\/books?id=3xQiUvQIIBUC&#038;lpg=PP1&#038;pg=PA639#v=onepage&#038;q&#038;f=false\">James W.
