After 1819, he worked for himself as a rural <a href=\"http:\/\/www.osv.org\/explore_learn\/document_viewer.php?DocID=821\">farmer-potter<\/a>, producing 26 different varieties and sizes of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nadeausauction.com\/lotdetails\/?lot=83402\">redware<\/a> pots, pans and jugs.  He had a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.osv.org\/explore_learn\/village_tour.html?S=L-28\">pottery shop<\/a> and an <a href=\"http:\/\/www.osv.org\/explore_learn\/document_viewer.php?DocID=1052\">adjacent kiln<\/a>, where he burned his last batch of ware in 1864, long after most other redware potters had given up practicing their craft.  <a href=\"http:\/\/books.google.com\/books?id=OutSAAAAYAAJ&#038;pg=PA434#v=onepage&#038;q&#038;f=false\">Brooks<\/a>&#8216; pottery shop, built around 1819, was moved to <a href=\"http:\/\/members.virtualtourist.com\/m\/p\/m\/17968c\/\">Old Sturbridge Village<\/a> in 1961 and a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/14165560@N07\/5524355609\/\">replica kiln<\/a> was built in 1979.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Harvey Brooks (1779-1873), of Goshen, Connecticut, began work at the age of sixteen as an apprentice potter.
