Conceived as a novelty, <a href=\"http:\/\/sketchup.google.com\/3dwarehouse\/details?mid=f0fb5d0cd0b7c9c7ae2ecd48bf3a94d\">the building<\/a> was in danger of being torn down in 1923, but was saved when voters decided to remodel rather than completely replace it.  One result of that remodeling was the loss of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cardcow.com\/247137\/city-hall-northampton-massachusetts\/\">the building<\/a>&#8216;s second floor auditorium, which had hosted many famous speakers and entertainers over the years.
