The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.stjohnsnorthampton.org\/History.html\">original wooden church<\/a> was located on on Bridge Street and was <a href=\"http:\/\/books.google.com\/books?id=HfsbAQAAMAAJ&#038;pg=PA9#v=onepage&#038;q&#038;f=false\">designed<\/a> by Thomas Pratt, a noted local builder.  His son, architect William Fenno Pratt, later added the steeple and served as the church&#8217;s organist and choir director from 1836 to 1861.  <a href=\"http:\/\/www.archive.org\/stream\/northamptonmeado00knee#page\/38\/mode\/1up\">A new stone church<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.gazettenet.com\/2007\/12\/29\/bliss-st-johns?SESSb447aeab4e2e78c0731a539cae38c456=gnews\">the gift of philanthrophist George Bliss<\/a> of Brooklyn, New York, who was originally from Northampton, was built on Elm Street, adjacent to the campus of Smith College, in 1893.  The church was designed by R.W. Gibson of New York and was <a href=\"http:\/\/norcross.ca\/NORCROSS%20BROTHERS%20FOLDER\/NB_1864_Norcross%20Brothers%20of%20Worcester.html\">built<\/a> by the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Norcross_Brothers\">Norcross Brothers<\/a> of Worcester.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>St. John&#8217;s Episcopal Church in Northampton was established in 1826.
