{"id":3382,"date":"2011-09-30T01:34:12","date_gmt":"2011-09-30T05:34:12","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mass.historicbuildingsct.com\/?p=3382"},"modified":"2011-09-30T01:35:07","modified_gmt":"2011-09-30T05:35:07","slug":"asa-knight-store-1838","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mass.historicbuildingsct.com\/?p=3382","title":{"rendered":"Asa Knight Store (1838)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><center><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/mass.historicbuildingsct.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/Store.jpg\" alt=\"\" title=\"Asa Knight Store\" width=\"500\" height=\"361\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-3390\" \/><\/center><\/p>\n<p>In the early nineteenth century, <a href=\"http:\/\/brattleborohistory.com\/plants-animals\/beehunting-in-dummerston-1840.html\">Asa Knight<\/a> operated <a href=\"http:\/\/www.osv.org\/explore_learn\/document_viewer.php?DocID=677\">a general store<\/a> in the village center of <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Dummerston,_Vermont\">Dummerston, Vermont<\/a>.  In 1826, Knight bought <a href=\"http:\/\/www.osv.org\/explore_learn\/village_tour.html?S=L-24\">the store<\/a>, the oldest section of which had been built around 1810, and added a storekeeper&#8217;s office.  He further expanded <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ebay.com\/itm\/Postcard-Asa-Knight-Store-Old-Sturbridge-Village-MA-\/390299359198\">the building<\/a> with a new main wing in 1838-1839.  The older section became an ell, attached to the new two-and-a-half story building.  By the 1870s, <a href=\"http:\/\/sheiladeespostcards.ecrater.com\/p\/4129864\/asa-knight-store-old-sturbridge\">the building<\/a> ended its period as a store and remained mostly vacant and unmodernized for the next century.  In 1972, it was <a href=\"http:\/\/books.google.com\/books?id=8jQEAAAAMBAJ&#038;lpg=PP1&#038;pg=PA11#v=onepage&#038;q&#038;f=false\">moved<\/a> to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newenglandtimes.com\/special_features\/sturbridge.shtml\">Old Sturbridge Village<\/a>, restored and restocked to represent a village store of the 1830s.
