The house, which was built around 1797, is named for Jonathan Ireland, a blacksmith for whom it was erected, and <a href=\"http:\/\/library.mysticseaport.org\/ere\/odetail.cfm?id_number=1952.2096.2\">Samuel Emery<\/a>, a <a href=\"http:\/\/freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com\/~silversmiths\/makers\/silversmiths\/170457.htm\">nautical instrument dealer<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.skinnerinc.com\/asp\/fullCataloguese.asp?salelot=2170+++++222+&#038;refno=++485233\">compass maker<\/a>, active in Salem <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pemshop.com\/detail.aspx?ID=829\">between 1809 and 1868<\/a>, who acquired <a href=\"http:\/\/www.zillow.com\/homedetails\/131-Federal-St-Salem-MA-01970\/56121382_zpid\/\">the house<\/a> in 1828.
