Because town meetings had been held in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.digitalamherst.org\/items\/show\/379\">the building<\/a>, the town acquired the land and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.umass.edu\/umext\/campus\/amherst.htm\">built<\/a> a new <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amherstarea.com\/amherst\/index.cfm\/fa\/tour\/stop\/4.cfm\">Town Hall<\/a> in 1889-1890.  <a href=\"http:\/\/www.digitalamherst.org\/items\/show\/181\">The building<\/a> was designed by H.S. McKay of Boston in the Richardsonian Romanesque style.  <a href=\"http:\/\/books.google.com\/books?id=6qAzAAAAMAAJ&#038;pg=PA59#v=onepage&#038;q&#038;f=false\">As described<\/a> by Frederick H. Hitchcock in his <em>Handbook of Amherst<\/em> (1891):<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/jewishfan\/4985204194\/\">town hall<\/a> is <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bridgeandtunnelclub.com\/bigmap\/outoftown\/massachusetts\/central\/amherst\/green\/104boltwoodave.jpg\">a picturesque building<\/a> of brick, red sandstone, and granite. It was erected by the town in 1889 at a cost of $58,000, H. S. McKay of Boston being the designer.
