{"id":3062,"date":"2011-07-30T12:00:49","date_gmt":"2011-07-30T16:00:49","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mass.historicbuildingsct.com\/?p=3062"},"modified":"2012-07-04T13:07:44","modified_gmt":"2012-07-04T17:07:44","slug":"octagon-at-amherst-college-1847","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mass.historicbuildingsct.com\/?p=3062","title":{"rendered":"Octagon at Amherst College (1847)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><center><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/mass.historicbuildingsct.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/Octagon.jpg\" alt=\"\" title=\"The Octagon\" width=\"500\" height=\"359\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-3070\" srcset=\"https:\/\/mass.historicbuildingsct.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/Octagon.jpg 500w, https:\/\/mass.historicbuildingsct.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/Octagon-300x215.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/center><\/p>\n<p>A <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amherstiana.org\/campus\/octagon.html\">distinctive building<\/a> on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cardcow.com\/258573\/amherst-college-massachusetts\/\">the campus<\/a> of Amherst College is <a href=\"http:\/\/puka.cs.waikato.ac.nz\/cgi-bin\/cic\/library?a=d&#038;d=p105\">the Octagon<\/a>.  <a href=\"http:\/\/www3.amherst.edu\/~rjyanco94\/amherst\/history\/1894tyler-ws\/chapter07\/menu.html#p2\">Built in 1847-1848<\/a> and designed by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.suffield-library.org\/localhistory\/sykes.htm\">Henry A Sykes<\/a>, its wood exterior walls were covered in stucco, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amherst.edu\/media\/view\/85035\/original\/image8.jpg\">originally scored and painted to resemble large blocks<\/a>.  College president Edward Hitchcock requested that <a href=\"http:\/\/digitalgallery.nypl.org\/nypldigital\/id?62673\">the building<\/a> have an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amherst.edu\/media\/view\/210559\/original\/octagon_JM.jpg\">octagon shape<\/a>, a decision that was initially controversial.  <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cardcow.com\/128876\/observatory-green-amherst-college-massachusetts\/\">The Octagon<\/a> originally housed the Woods Cabinet, the College&#8217;s scientific collection, and the Lawrence Observatory.  The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.digitalamherst.org\/items\/show\/220\">attached octagonal tower<\/a> contained <a href=\"http:\/\/books.google.com\/books?id=aG8CAAAAIAAJ&#038;pg=PA44#v=onepage&#038;q&#038;f=false\">the observatory<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amherst.edu\/media\/view\/98165\/original\/13.JPG\">telescope<\/a>.   An 1855 addition housed a geology lecture room and a galley for the College&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amherst.edu\/museums\/mead\/publications\/podcasts\/ancientart\/002a\">Assyrian reliefs<\/a>.  After <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amherstiana.org\/campus\/observatory.html\">a new observatory<\/a> was built in 1905, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.digitalamherst.org\/items\/show\/589\">the Octagon<\/a> housed other departments.  In 1934-1935, the second floor of the Woods Cabinet was remodeled by architect <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/James_Kellum_Smith\">James Kellum Smith<\/a> as a meeting room, known as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amherst.edu\/taxonomy\/term\/678\">the Babbott Room<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A distinctive building on the campus of Amherst College is the Octagon.
