Out of the ashes was built <a href=\"http:\/\/www.digitalamherst.org\/items\/show\/407\">a new commercial block<\/a> with the appropriate name: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amherstarea.com\/amherst\/index.cfm\/fa\/tour\/stop\/5.cfm\">Phoenix Row<\/a>.  <a href=\"http:\/\/www.digitalamherst.org\/items\/show\/48\">The building<\/a>, located at 4-16 Main Street, survived <a href=\"http:\/\/books.google.com\/books?id=VAk1AAAAIAAJ&#038;pg=PA368#v=onepage&#038;q&#038;f=false\">another fire in 1872<\/a>, which started in the outbuildings to its rear.  It soon underwent renovations that <a href=\"http:\/\/www.digitalamherst.org\/items\/show\/408\">significantly altered its appearance<\/a>, most notably with the addition of a new flat Italianate style roof with decorative brackets and gable.  <a href=\"http:\/\/www.archive.org\/stream\/sunlightpictures00bier#page\/n65\/mode\/2up\">Phoenix Row<\/a> has survived other fires in 1883 and 1989 and continues as <a href=\"http:\/\/www.archive.org\/stream\/amherstdirectory18921893amhe#page\/8\/mode\/2up\/\">a business block<\/a> today.    <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The first great fire in Amherst swept through the center of town in February 1838.
