{"id":298,"date":"2009-06-30T15:43:49","date_gmt":"2009-06-30T15:43:49","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mass.historicbuildingsct.com\/?p=298"},"modified":"2009-06-30T15:43:49","modified_gmt":"2009-06-30T15:43:49","slug":"salem-custom-house-1819","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mass.historicbuildingsct.com\/?p=298","title":{"rendered":"Salem Custom House (1819)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><center><img src='http:\/\/mass.historicbuildingsct.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/06\/salem-custom-house.jpg' alt='salem-custom-house.jpg' \/><\/center><\/p>\n<p>The last in a series of 13 custom houses built in Salem since 1649, the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nps.gov\/sama\/historyculture\/customhouse.htm\">Salem Custom House<\/a> of 1819 <a href=\"http:\/\/query.nytimes.com\/gst\/abstract.html?res=9A00E6DD1131E033A2575AC0A96F9C94659ED7CF\">is famous<\/a> for <a href=\"http:\/\/books.google.com\/books?id=LywuklzrSzAC&#038;pg=PA148&#038;lpg=PA148&#038;dq=custom+house+salem&#038;source=bl&#038;ots=3pqm0eiUgi&#038;sig=jvyc67nZgqxS1Ad_eJKvpHuFIcg&#038;hl=en&#038;ei=hilKSoWDOMSFtgfJ9umMCg&#038;sa=X&#038;oi=book_result&#038;ct=result&#038;resnum=3\">being featured<\/a> in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bartleby.com\/83\/101.html\">the introduction<\/a> to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kirjasto.sci.fi\/hawthorn.htm\">Nathaniel Hawthorne<\/a>&#8216;s <em><a href=\"http:\/\/books.google.com\/books?id=IEMOAAAAYAAJ&#038;printsec=titlepage&#038;source=gbs_v2_summary_r&#038;cad=0\">The Scarlet Letter<\/a><\/em> (1850).  <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Nathaniel_Hawthorne\">Hawthorne<\/a> worked in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.plannersweb.com\/publicbldgs\/OTH-SalemMA.html\">the Custom House<\/a> for the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nps.gov\/sama\/historyculture\/hawthorne.htm\">U.S. Custom Service as Surveyor <\/a>in 1846-1849.  <a href=\"http:\/\/books.google.com\/books?id=bU0AAAAAYAAJ&#038;pg=PA232\">The building<\/a> housed offices and an attached warehouse, the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nps.gov\/sama\/historyculture\/publicstores.htm\">Public Stores<\/a>, which contained bonded and impounded cargo.  <a href=\"http:\/\/www.planetware.com\/picture\/salem-custom-house-us-masa4.htm\">The structure<\/a> was <a href=\"http:\/\/\">designed<\/a> in the Federal style by Perley Putnam, a Weigher and Gauger for the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nps.gov\/sama\/historyculture\/customsservice.htm\">U.S. Custom Service<\/a>.  A wooden eagle, carved by Salem craftsman Joseph True, was placed atop the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cluelessinboston.com\/2008\/02\/salem-custom-house.html\">Custom House<\/a> in 1826.
