{"id":284,"date":"2009-05-16T05:24:53","date_gmt":"2009-05-16T05:24:53","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mass.historicbuildingsct.com\/?p=284"},"modified":"2010-09-03T14:57:46","modified_gmt":"2010-09-03T14:57:46","slug":"hotel-vendome-1871","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mass.historicbuildingsct.com\/?p=284","title":{"rendered":"Hotel Vendome (1871)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><center><img src='http:\/\/mass.historicbuildingsct.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/05\/hotel-vendome.jpg' alt='hotel-vendome.jpg' \/><\/center><\/p>\n<p>Built in 1871, the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.helloboston.com\/Images\/Panoramic\/5302005Hotel_Vendome_1903.jpg\">Mansard-roofed French Second Empire style corner building<\/a> of the <a href=\"http:\/\/books.google.com\/books?id=Qg_uLLXLY5kC&#038;pg=PA76&#038;lpg=PA76&#038;dq=hotel+vendome+boston&#038;source=bl&#038;ots=oEnskN5HP3&#038;sig=tEU4g-k_qlWImU5tcTDLih93Edk&#038;hl=en&#038;ei=ZEcOSsLmLeDJtgfy36GbCA&#038;sa=X&#038;oi=book_result&#038;ct=result&#038;resnum=10\">Hotel Vendome<\/a>, on Commonwealth Avenue in Boston, was designed by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bosarchitecture.com\/architects\/p\/preston_william_g.html\">William G. Preston<\/a>, who had studied in Paris.  The western section, designed by J.F. Ober and R. Rand, followed in 1881.  <a href=\"http:\/\/hdl.loc.gov\/loc.pnp\/det.4a07557 \">Hotel Vendome<\/a> was for many years the city&#8217;s premier hotel, but by the late 1960s attempts were made to demolish the outmoded <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bosarchitecture.com\/backbay\/commonwealth\/160.html\">building<\/a>.  Renovations were almost complete in 1972, when <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hotel_Vendome_fire\">a fire<\/a> destroyed the southeast section of <a href=\"http:\/\/hdl.loc.gov\/loc.pnp\/det.4a11370 \">the original structure<\/a>.  <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cityofboston.gov\/fire\/memorial\/vendome_firefighters.asp\">Nine firefighters<\/a> died when part of the building <a href=\"http:\/\/www.celebrateboston.com\/disasters\/fires\/vendomehotelfire.htm\">collapsed<\/a> after <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cityofboston.gov\/fire\/memorial\/vendome_fire.asp\">the fire<\/a> was out.  <a href=\"http:\/\/massfirepics.com\/gallery\/7910653_tE3d7#513133768_nJVW3\">There is<\/a> a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pennwellblogs.com\/fireengineering\/2008\/06\/it-is-fitting-to-reflect-that-36-years.php\">memorial<\/a> to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.boston.com\/news\/globe\/editorial_opinion\/oped\/articles\/2007\/06\/16\/the_vendome_test\/\">the nine firefighters<\/a> on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.storyofboston.com\/articles\/firefighters_memorial\/\">the Commonwealth Avenue Mall at Dartmouth Street<\/a>.  A 1970s addition to the Vendome by Stahl\/Bennett in the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Brutalist_architecture\">Brutalist<\/a> style replaced the destroyed section.
