{"id":259,"date":"2009-04-05T01:03:30","date_gmt":"2009-04-05T05:03:30","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mass.historicbuildingsct.com\/?p=259"},"modified":"2016-09-17T00:47:25","modified_gmt":"2016-09-17T04:47:25","slug":"the-benjamin-hawkes-house-1801","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mass.historicbuildingsct.com\/?p=259","title":{"rendered":"Benjamin Hawkes House (1801)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><center><img src='http:\/\/mass.historicbuildingsct.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/04\/benjamin-hawkes-house.jpg' alt='benjamin-hawkes-house.jpg' \/><\/center><\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/hdl.loc.gov\/loc.pnp\/hhh.ma0161\">Benjamin Hawkes House<\/a> is located off Derby Street in Salem, between the Custom House and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/mr_t_in_dc\/2152433353\/\">the Richard Derby House<\/a>.  <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/File:Benjamin_Hawkes_House_-_Salem,_Massachusetts.JPG\">The house<\/a> was originally planned by <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Samuel_McIntire\">Samuel McIntire<\/a> as a home for <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Elias_Hasket_Derby\">Elias Hasket Derby<\/a> in 1780, but was then abandoned in 1782, when Derby moved to a house near the center of town.  Left unfinished for almost twenty years, in 1801 it was acquired by the <a href=\"http:\/\/books.google.com\/books?id=7hUPAAAAYAAJ&#038;printsec=titlepage&#038;source=gbs_summary_r&#038;cad=0#PPA53,M1\">shipbuilder<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/gravematter.smugmug.com\/gallery\/1120948\/1\/52191292\/Large\">Benjamin Hawkes<\/a>, who reduced the building&#8217;s size and altered it to accommodate two families.
