{"id":223,"date":"2009-03-01T17:14:22","date_gmt":"2009-03-01T17:14:22","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mass.historicbuildingsct.com\/?p=223"},"modified":"2011-08-04T12:28:44","modified_gmt":"2011-08-04T16:28:44","slug":"first-church-of-deerfield-1824","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mass.historicbuildingsct.com\/?p=223","title":{"rendered":"First Church of Deerfield (1824)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><center><img src='http:\/\/mass.historicbuildingsct.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/03\/first-church-deerfield.jpg' alt='first-church-deerfield.jpg' \/><\/center><\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.firstchurchofdeerfield.org\/\">First Church of Deerfield<\/a>&#8216;s current meeting house is the town&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.memorialhall.mass.edu\/classroom\/curriculum_6th\/lesson4\/bkgdessay1.html\">fifth in succession<\/a>, all of which were built <a href=\"http:\/\/www.memorialhall.mass.edu\/classroom\/curriculum_6th\/lesson4\/bkgdessaystudent2.html\">on or around Meeting House Hill<\/a>.  The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.memorialhall.mass.edu\/turns\/view.jsp?itemid=5958&#038;subthemeid=13\">earliest<\/a> of these buildings was burned during <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pilgrimhall.org\/philipwar.htm\">King Philip&#8217;s War<\/a>.  The second and third meeting houses are pictured in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.memorialhall.mass.edu\/classroom\/htmlimages\/woodbridge.html\">a sketch of Deerfield buildings made by Dudley Woodbridge in 1738<\/a>.  The second was built in 1682, the third in 1695.  In 1952, <a href=\"http:\/\/mass.historicbuildingsct.com\/?p=210\">Deerfield&#8217;s post office<\/a> was remodeled to resemble the third meeting house, which was in use until 1728.  <a href=\"http:\/\/www.memorialhall.mass.edu\/classroom\/curriculum_6th\/lesson4\/resources\/2000_03_500.html\">The fourth meeting house<\/a>, the first to have a steeple, was built in 1729 and taken down in 1824, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.memorialhall.mass.edu\/classroom\/curriculum_6th\/lesson4\/resources\/L00_001.html\">to make way<\/a> for <a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/rexblog\/1662642792\/\">the current church<\/a>, which is known as the &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.cardcow.com\/58450\/brick-church-deerfield-us-state-town-views-massachusetts-deerfield\/\">Brick Church<\/a>.&#8221;  <a href=\"http:\/\/books.google.com\/books?id=q6iVt_7biE4C&#038;lpg=PP1&#038;pg=PA199#v=onepage&#038;q&#038;f=false\">It was built<\/a> by contractor Winthrop Clapp and was modeled on the 1819 Second Congregational Church in Greenfield.  In 1807, <a href=\"http:\/\/books.google.com\/books?id=UH0XAAAAYAAJ&#038;printsec=titlepage&#038;source=gbs_summary_r&#038;cad=0\">a controversy<\/a> began when the church ordained <a href=\"http:\/\/www.memorialhall.mass.edu\/turns\/view.jsp?itemid=11173&#038;subthemeid=13\">a Unitarian minister<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/books.google.com\/books?id=Ol4YAAAAYAAJ\">Rev. Samuel Willard<\/a>.  He was succeeded by other Unitarians.  Orthodox Congregationalists eventually <a href=\"http:\/\/books.google.com\/books?id=lwbyL4EypT0C&#038;pg=PA21&#038;lpg=PA21&#038;dq=brick+church+deerfield&#038;source=bl&#038;ots=W5sQrf1ayz&#038;sig=LN6SLbfox0quW3frQQa8xo-T-3M&#038;hl=en&#038;ei=dLaqSZn_AYqhtweQpKTrDw&#038;sa=X&#038;oi=book_result&#038;resnum=7&#038;ct=result\">broke away<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.memorialhall.mass.edu\/collection\/itempage.jsp?itemid=7726\">built their own church<\/a> in 1838.  <a href=\"http:\/\/www.memorialhall.mass.edu\/classroom\/htmlimages\/lotmtghsea.html\">The Brick Church<\/a> remains <a href=\"http:\/\/public.fotki.com\/GCDOUGHERTY\/miscellaneous\/massachusetts\/deerfield-ma\/deerfieldfirstchurc.html\">a Unitarian Universalist Church<\/a> today.       <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The First Church of Deerfield&#8216;s current meeting house is the town&#8217;s fifth in succession, all of which were built on or around Meeting House Hill.
