{"id":179,"date":"2009-02-03T00:46:50","date_gmt":"2009-02-03T05:46:50","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mass.historicbuildingsct.com\/?p=179"},"modified":"2016-09-17T00:45:14","modified_gmt":"2016-09-17T04:45:14","slug":"the-hinsdale-and-anna-williams-house-1730","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mass.historicbuildingsct.com\/?p=179","title":{"rendered":"Hinsdale and Anna Williams House (1730)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><center><img src='http:\/\/mass.historicbuildingsct.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/02\/hinsdale-and-anna-williams-house.jpg' alt='hinsdale-and-anna-williams-house.jpg' \/><\/center><\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.historic-deerfield.org\/williams-house\">Hinsdale and Anna Williams House<\/a> in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.milforddailynews.com\/archive\/x1051578787\">Deerfield<\/a> was originally built in 1730 by <a href=\"http:\/\/books.google.com\/books?id=4ScWAAAAYAAJ&#038;printsec=titlepage&#038;source=gbs_summary_r&#038;cad=0#PPA96,M1\">Ebenezer Hinsdale<\/a>, who founded <a href=\"http:\/\/www.town.hinsdale.nh.us\/\">Hinsdale , New Hampshire<\/a>.  It later passed through other owners until it came into the possession of Hinsdale&#8217;s grandnephew, Ebenezer Hinsdale Williams, whose mother was from Deerfield.  In 1816, Williams extensively altered <a href=\"http:\/\/americancenturies.mass.edu\/classroom\/htmlimages\/lot42a.html\">the house<\/a> in <a href=\"http:\/\/americancenturies.mass.edu\/classroom\/htmlimages\/ehw_din_room.html\">the Federal style<\/a>, raising <a href=\"http:\/\/books.google.com\/books?id=lwbyL4EypT0C&#038;pg=PA57&#038;lpg=PA57&#038;dq=%22ebenezer+hinsdale%22+deerfield&#038;source=bl&#038;ots=W5sOoe48ww&#038;sig=qpAKGAsRClwsFFMR9Q75OqdJtqk&#038;hl=en&#038;ei=3YGHSZ7DM5aitgfS5rCaBw&#038;sa=X&#038;oi=book_result&#038;resnum=1&#038;ct=result\">the structure<\/a> in order to install a fanlight above the door, raising the roof and doubling the size of the house with the addition of <a href=\"http:\/\/americancenturies.mass.edu\/classroom\/htmlimages\/lot42b.html\">a two-story ell<\/a>.  <a href=\"http:\/\/americancenturies.mass.edu\/classroom\/curriculum_6th\/lesson10\/resources\/ehw.html\">Hinsdale Williams<\/a> lived in the home, with his wife Anna and two children, until his death in 1838.  From 1866-1981, the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.memorialhall.mass.edu\/classroom\/curriculum_12th\/unit2\/lesson13\/bkgdessay.html\">Williams House<\/a> was occupied by members of the Cowles family. Russell Cowles worked to preserve <a href=\"http:\/\/americancenturies.mass.edu\/classroom\/htmlimages\/ehw_south.html\">the house<\/a> and when the original <a href=\"http:\/\/americancenturies.mass.edu\/classroom\/htmlimages\/ehw_dt1.html\">French scenic wallpaper depicting Venetian scenes<\/a>, installed by Williams in 1816, was <a href=\"http:\/\/www.adamvoiland.com\/PDF\/great%20flood.pdf\">damaged in the Flood of 1936<\/a>, Cowles went to the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mfa.org\/\">Museum of Fine Arts in Boston<\/a> to learn how to restore it.
