In 1837, he moved to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.helloboston.com\/BookFiles\/05_Pages_081-100.pdf\">Boston<\/a>, working for, and eventually partnering (in 1845) with, <a href=\"http:\/\/cdn4.mattters.com\/photos\/photos\/891605\/tumblr_kwb2lxfk7O1qaxahlo1_500.jpg\">Theodore Metcalf<\/a>.  They had <a href=\"http:\/\/www.southboroughhistory.org\/History\/Burnett%20Company\/Medical\/Theodore%20Metcalf%20Company.htm\">a chemist shop<\/a> on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.southboroughhistory.org\/History\/Burnett%20Company\/History_of_J_Burnett_Company_files\/image004.gif\">Tremont Row<\/a> (now Tremont Street).  A woman\u2019s request for vanilla in 1847 led him to develop a premium vanilla extract, which previously had to be imported from France.  He <a href=\"http:\/\/books.google.com\/books?id=7MIEAAAAYAAJ&#038;pg=PA236-IA4#v=onepage&#038;q&#038;f=false\">eventually<\/a> established <a href=\"http:\/\/books.google.com\/books?id=KgBEAAAAYAAJ&#038;pg=PA217#v=onepage&#038;q&#038;f=false\">his own business<\/a> as <a href=\"http:\/\/www.worthpoint.com\/worthopedia\/1800-burnett-boston-heliotrope-perfume-bottle-goldp\">a manufacturing chemist<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.southboroughhistory.org\/History\/Burnett%20Company\/History_of_J_Burnett_Company.htm\">Joseph Burnett and Company<\/a>.  Back in Southborough, <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Joseph_Burnett_%28educator%29\">Burnett<\/a> purchased land and established the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.southboroughhistory.org\/History\/Deerfoot\/History_of_Deerfoot_Farms.htm\">Deerfoot Farms Company<\/a>, originally <a href=\"http:\/\/books.google.com\/books?id=UdQEAAAAYAAJ&#038;pg=PA899#v=onepage&#038;q&#038;f=false\">a dairy farm<\/a>, which later also became known for its <a href=\"http:\/\/www.practicallyedible.com\/edible.nsf\/pages\/deerfootsausage\">sausages<\/a>.  <a href=\"http:\/\/www.southboroughhistory.org\/History\/joseph_burnett_life_and_legacy.htm\">Burnett<\/a> also established <a href=\"http:\/\/www.southboroughhistory.org\/History\/Burnett%20Family\/Burnett_Family_History.htm\">an estate<\/a>, off Main Street in Southborough, where he built <a href=\"http:\/\/www.southboroughhistory.org\/History\/Burnett%20Family\/Burnett_Family_History_files\/image008.jpg\">a stone mansion<\/a>.  Here he lived with his wife, Josephine Cutter Burnett, and twelve children.  Constructed in 1849-1850, <a href=\"http:\/\/historicalgood.org\/standup\/History.html\">the house<\/a> was updated in 1860. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.metrowestdailynews.com\/article\/20160423\/news\/160427788\">The house<\/a> was sold out of the family in 1947.      <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Joseph Burnett (1820-1894) was born in Southborough and studied chemistry in Worcester.
