{"id":166,"date":"2009-01-24T00:26:40","date_gmt":"2009-01-24T00:26:40","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mass.historicbuildingsct.com\/?p=166"},"modified":"2009-03-24T15:52:07","modified_gmt":"2009-03-24T15:52:07","slug":"kings-chapel-boston-1749","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mass.historicbuildingsct.com\/?p=166","title":{"rendered":"King&#8217;s Chapel, Boston (1749)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><center><img src='http:\/\/mass.historicbuildingsct.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/01\/kings-chapel.jpg' alt='kings-chapel.jpg' \/><\/center><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.kings-chapel.org\/\">King&#8217;s Chapel<\/a>, originally founded to serve British officers, was the <a href=\"http:\/\/books.google.com\/books?id=tQATAAAAYAAJ&#038;printsec=titlepage&#038;source=gbs_summary_r&#038;cad=0\">first Anglican church<\/a> in Puritan Boston.  <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cityofboston.gov\/FreedomTrail\/kingschapel.asp\">The Chapel<\/a>&#8216;s first building was a wood structure, <a href=\"http:\/\/books.google.com\/books?id=bHDBHIWKy5YC&#038;printsec=titlepage&#038;source=gbs_summary_r&#038;cad=0\">built in 1686<\/a> on land that had been part of the town&#8217;s oldest burying ground.  <a href=\"http:\/\/www.celebrateboston.com\/sites\/kingschapel.htm\">The current Chapel<\/a>, built of Quincy granite, was constructed around the old one in 1749-1754 (the dismantled remains of the old church were then removed through the windows).  The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bc.edu\/bc_org\/avp\/cas\/fnart\/fa267\/harrison.html\">architect<\/a> was <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Peter_Harrison\">Peter Harrison<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.redwoodlibrary.org\/notables\/harrison.htm\">of Newport, RI<\/a>, considered to be America&#8217;s &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.takus.com\/architecture\/harrison.html\">first architect<\/a>,&#8221; who modeled the Georgian-style building on those designed by <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/James_Gibbs\">James Gibbs<\/a> in England, like <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/St_Martin-in-the-Fields\">St. Martin in the Fields<\/a> in London, except the steeple of <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/King%27s_Chapel\">King&#8217;s Chapel<\/a> was never built due to a lack of funds.  When the British evacuated Boston during the Revolutionary War, there were few Anglican families remaining in town.  <a href=\"http:\/\/www25.uua.org\/uuhs\/duub\/articles\/jamesfreeman.html\">James Freeman<\/a>, a lay reader, became minister in 1783 and led Stone Chapel (as <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kings-chapel.org\/history.html\">King&#8217;s Chapel<\/a> had come to be called) to become <a href=\"http:\/\/books.google.com\/books?id=Fp3ei5KPcDgC&#038;printsec=titlepage&#038;source=gbs_summary_r&#038;cad=0\">America&#8217;s first Unitarian church<\/a> in 1789 (although the congregation continued to follow <a href=\"http:\/\/books.google.com\/books?id=RwUK3NyAxckC&#038;printsec=titlepage&#038;source=gbs_summary_r&#038;cad=0\">a liturgy based on the <em>Book of Common Prayer<\/em><\/a>).  That same year, George Washington attended an oratorio at the Chapel intended to raise funds for the construction of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/7240095@N02\/448494428\/\">a portico<\/a> of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/wallyg\/495010032\">wood Ionic columns<\/a>, painted to resemble stone.  When the Chapel&#8217;s bell cracked in 1814, it was recast by Paul Revere.  Both <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thefreedomtrail.org\/visitor\/kings-chapel.html\">the Chapel<\/a> and the adjacent <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thefreedomtrail.org\/visitor\/kings-burying.html\">King&#8217;s Chapel Burying Ground<\/a> are on the Boston Freedom Trail. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>King&#8217;s Chapel, originally founded to serve British officers, was the first Anglican church in Puritan Boston.
