Lyman Beecher<\/a>, father of <a href=\"http:\/\/historicbuildingsct.com\/?p=13\">Harriet Beecher Stowe<\/a>.  The congregation began at <a href=\"http:\/\/books.google.com\/books?id=8eIktpYCHTkC&#038;lpg=PP1&#038;pg=PA49#v=onepage&#038;q&#038;f=false\">a church on Hanover Street<\/a>, called the <a href=\"http:\/\/mass.historicbuildingsct.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/05\/Hanover-Church.png\">Hanover Church<\/a>, built in 1826.  After the church burned in 1830, the congregation built and <a href=\"http:\/\/books.google.com\/books?id=xrrVAAAAMAAJ&#038;pg=PA249#v=onepage&#038;q&#038;f=false\">consecrated<\/a> the <a href=\"http:\/\/books.google.com\/books?id=nAkXAAAAYAAJ&#038;dq=bowdoin%20street%20church&#038;as_brr=1&#038;pg=PA1#v=onepage&#038;q&#038;f=false\">Bowdoin Street Church<\/a>.  Typical of early New England Gothic Revival churches, <a href=\"http:\/\/upload.wikimedia.org\/wikipedia\/commons\/0\/0a\/BowdoinStChurch_Boston_HomansSketches1851.jpg\">the design<\/a> of the building has been attributed to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.findagrave.com\/cgi-bin\/fg.cgi?page=gr&#038;GRid=40555374\">Solomon Willard<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/books.google.com\/books?id=YQgXAAAAYAAJ&#038;pg=PA1#v=onepage&#038;q&#038;f=false\">architect<\/a> of the Bunker Hill Monument.  In 1831, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lib.umd.edu\/PAL\/SCPA\/MENC\/lomason.html\">Lowell Mason<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.angelfire.com\/ego\/cobbist\/mason.html\">famous composer of hymns<\/a>, became choirmaster at <a href=\"http:\/\/upload.wikimedia.org\/wikipedia\/commons\/c\/ca\/BowdoinStChurch_Bowen_PictureOfBoston_1838.png\">the church<\/a>.  Rev. Beecher <a href=\"http:\/\/books.google.com\/books?id=xrrVAAAAMAAJ&#038;pg=PA272#v=onepage&#038;q&#038;f=false\">left his church in Boston<\/a> in 1832, to become the first president of <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Lane_Theological_Seminary\">Lane Theological Seminary<\/a> in Cincinnati.  <a href=\"http:\/\/media.collegepublisher.com\/media\/paper139\/stills\/2k11vge6.jpg\">The church<\/a> became the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theadvent.org\/\">Church of the Advent<\/a> (from 1863 to 1883) and then the <a href=\"http:\/\/books.google.com\/books?id=qvYMAAAAYAAJ&#038;pg=PA190#v=onepage&#038;q&#038;f=false\">Mission Church of St. John the Evangelist<\/a> under the auspices of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ssje.org\/\">Society of St. John the Evangelist<\/a>, an Anglican monastic order.  <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bostonchoral.org\/box_office\/venues\/StJohn.html\">The church<\/a> has been <a href=\"http:\/\/stjev.org\/about\">a Parish Church<\/a> in the Episcopal Diocese of Massachusetts since 1985.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Church of St. John the Evangelist, on Bowdoin Street in Boston, was built in 1831 for the congregation of Rev.
