Blackall<\/a>, it was built in 1894 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/sminor\/2335905612\/\">facing Washington Street<\/a>, with its <a href=\"http:\/\/upload.wikimedia.org\/wikipedia\/commons\/0\/07\/WinthropBldg.JPG\">long curving side<\/a> following <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bc.edu\/bc_org\/avp\/cas\/fnart\/fa267\/19th\/winthrop2.jpg\">Spring Lane<\/a>, where a spring provided water to the early English settlers.  <a href=\"http:\/\/rfi.bostonhistory.org\/boston\/full\/003501.jpg\">The building<\/a> was constructed on the 1644 site of Governor <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/John_Winthrop\">John Winthrop<\/a>&#8216;s second house in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kellscraft.com\/NotesBoston\/NotesBoston05.html\">Boston<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Winthrop Building, originally known as the Carter Building, was Boston&#8217;s first steel-frame office building and led the way to later skyscrapers.
