{"id":122,"date":"2008-12-19T15:17:30","date_gmt":"2008-12-19T15:17:30","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mass.historicbuildingsct.com\/?p=122"},"modified":"2013-03-29T19:20:19","modified_gmt":"2013-03-29T23:20:19","slug":"old-south-meeting-house-1729","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mass.historicbuildingsct.com\/?p=122","title":{"rendered":"Old South Meeting House (1729)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><center><img src='http:\/\/mass.historicbuildingsct.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/12\/old-south-church.jpg' alt='old-south-church.jpg' \/><\/center><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.iboston.org\/mcp.php?pid=oldSouth\">Built in 1729<\/a>, Boston&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cityofboston.gov\/freedomtrail\/oldsouth.asp\">Old South Meeting House<\/a> was the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.oldsouthmeetinghouse.org\/osmh_123456789files\/puritan_meeting_house.aspx\">largest building in the colonial town<\/a>.  <a href=\"http:\/\/books.google.com\/books?id=103Xa9TI6MYC&#038;printsec=titlepage&#038;source=gbs_summary_r&#038;cad=0\">The congregation<\/a> began in 1669, when it separated from <a href=\"http:\/\/books.google.com\/books?id=iKkqueszc94C&#038;printsec=toc&#038;source=gbs_summary_r&#038;cad=0#PPR3,M1\">Boston&#8217;s First Church<\/a> (<a href=\"http:\/\/books.google.com\/books?id=QNcMAAAAYAAJ&#038;printsec=titlepage&#038;source=gbs_summary_r&#038;cad=0\">becoming<\/a> the <a href=\"http:\/\/books.google.com\/books?id=EuSVOPIwcosC&#038;printsec=titlepage&#038;source=gbs_summary_r&#038;cad=0#PPP9,M1\">Third Church<\/a> of Boston).  In the years immediately preceding the outbreak of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.oldsouthmeetinghouse.org\/osmh_123456789files\/protest_and_revolution.aspx\">American Revolution<\/a>, citizens would gather in the <a href=\"http:\/\/books.google.com\/books?id=QXURAAAAYAAJ&#038;printsec=titlepage&#038;source=gbs_summary_r&#038;cad=0\">Old South Meeting House<\/a> to debate and argue in the aftermath of events like the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bostonmassacre.net\/\">Boston Massacre<\/a>.  On the night of December 16, 1773, over 5,000 colonists, angered over the tax on tea, met at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nps.gov\/bost\/historyculture\/osmh.htm\">Old South<\/a> and after hours of debate, <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Samuel_Adams\">Samuel Adams<\/a> gave a secret signal which began the famous <a href=\"http:\/\/www.oldsouthmeetinghouse.org\/osmh_123456789files\/BostonTeaParty.aspx\">Boston Tea Party<\/a>.  During the war, occupying British troops took revenge for the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.eyewitnesstohistory.com\/teaparty.htm\">Tea Party<\/a> by ripping out <a href=\"http:\/\/books.google.com\/books?id=JrkAcWSakbsC&#038;printsec=frontcover&#038;source=gbs_summary_r&#038;cad=0#PPA1,M1\">the church<\/a>&#8216;s pews and using the building as a riding stable.  They also set up a bar on the first balcony.  <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Old_South_Meeting_House\">The church<\/a> continued to be used as a <a href=\"http:\/\/books.google.com\/books?id=FLsTAAAAYAAJ&#038;printsec=titlepage&#038;source=gbs_summary_r&#038;cad=0#PRA1-PA58,M1\">house of worship<\/a>, but after it was nearly destroyed in the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.celebrateboston.com\/disasters\/fires\/greatbostonfire.htm\">Great Boston Fire of 1872<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/books.google.com\/books?id=AjYvhIFuRhUC&#038;printsec=titlepage&#038;source=gbs_summary_r&#038;cad=0\">the congregation<\/a> built the <a href=\"http:\/\/mass.historicbuildingsct.com\/?p=61\">New Old South Church<\/a> at Copley Square.  In danger of being torn down, pioneering <a href=\"http:\/\/www.oldsouthmeetinghouse.org\/osmh_123456789files\/leader_in_historic_preservation.aspx\">preservation efforts<\/a> led to the restoration of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/wallyg\/495159922\/\">the building<\/a>, which has been <a href=\"http:\/\/www.oldsouthmeetinghouse.org\/\">a museum and historic site<\/a> since 1877.
