Crowninshield House (1812)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><center><img src='http:\/\/mass.historicbuildingsct.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/12\/benjamin-crowninshield-house.jpg' alt='benjamin-crowninshield-house.jpg' \/><\/center><\/p>\n<p>Built 1810-1812 on Derby Street in Salem, the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/mr_t_in_dc\/2152373351\/\">Benjamin W. Crowninshield House<\/a> may be based on a plan by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.salemhistoryonline.com\/McIntire250.html\">Samuel McIntire<\/a>, but completed <a href=\"http:\/\/www.gravematter.com\/mcintire-field.htm\">after his death<\/a> by his son, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pbs.org\/wgbh\/roadshow\/archive\/200601A02.html\">Samuel Field McIntire<\/a>.  <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Benjamin_Williams_Crowninshield\">Benjamin Williams Crowninshield<\/a> was a congressman and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.history.navy.mil\/photos\/pers-us\/uspers-c\/b-crwnsd.htm\">Secretary of the Navy<\/a> (1815-1818) under <a href=\"http:\/\/millercenter.org\/academic\/americanpresident\/madison\/essays\/cabinet\/153\">presidents<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/history\/presidents\/jm4.html\">Madison<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/history\/presidents\/jm5.html\">Monroe<\/a>, the latter of whom once stayed in the house.  <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nhstateparks.org\/state-parks\/alphabetical-order\/miller-state-park\/general-james-miller.aspx\">Brigader General James Miller<\/a>, a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nh.gov\/nhdhr\/publications\/warheroes\/millerj.html\">hero<\/a> of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.galafilm.com\/1812\/e\/events\/lundy2.html\">War of 1812<\/a>, lived in the house while he was serving as <a href=\"http:\/\/books.google.com\/books?id=2ksS0EimvrYC&#038;printsec=frontcover&#038;source=gbs_summary_r&#038;cad=0#PPA27,M1\">collector at the Custom House<\/a> next door from 1825 to 1829.  The house&#8217;s Greek Revival front porch was added after 1820 and the building was expanded in the rear in 1906 and 1916.
