Many famous actors, orators and singers appeared there over the years.  In 1843, the building was purchased by the Free Church Baptists, Boston&#8217;s first integrated church, who renamed it the <a href=\"http:\/\/pluralism.org\/profiles\/view\/71817\">Tremont Temple Baptist Church<\/a>.  Thereafter, it was used as a church, although public events were often held there as well.  The church burned and <a href=\"http:\/\/upload.wikimedia.org\/wikipedia\/commons\/6\/63\/Tremonttemple_ca1872.png\">was rebuilt several times<\/a>.  The <a href=\"http:\/\/upload.wikimedia.org\/wikipedia\/commons\/9\/97\/TremontTemple_Boston_Murphy1904.png\">current building<\/a> on the site was built in 1896, designed by <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Clarence_Blackall\">Clarence Blackall<\/a>.  <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Tremont_Theatre,_Boston\">The church<\/a> has a large sanctuary on the second floor, which was also used for a time as an auditorium.  Originally, there were shops on the ground floor and commercial offices on the upper floors.
